Aukey Omnia Mix4 review: The ultimate GaN charger

Aukey's four-port gallium nitride charger blows silicon chargers out of the water.

The Omnia Mix4

Aukey's Omnia Mix4 is the company's beefiest gallium nitride (GaN) charger. This new type of circuitry should result in chargers that are smaller, lighter, and more power efficient.

100 watts

Aukey's quoted maximum power output.

What is a GaN charger?

Most power conditioning circuits, from laptop chargers to electric bike controllers, are made with silicon chips. Gallium nitride chips conduct electricity much more efficiently, so they can be made smaller and generate less heat.

Four Ports

Instead of toting around a laptop charger and a phone charger, you can charge up to four devices simultaneously on the Mix4.

I recently got back from a trip to test a certain new smartphone camera and I was able to charge my tablet, my phone, and two battery bricks using only one precious airport outlet. And all my devices charged at the same time and at high speed.

Two laptops, one charger

Aukey's website says you can charge two laptops at once, so I confirmed that claim with two 13-inch MacBook Pros, which did in fact charge right up.

You could probably charge two 15-inch laptops at the same time too, but not while running at full tilt.

More power than competitors

Most GaN chargers on the market max out at around 65 watts. There are other 100 watt GaN chargers like the one from Hyperjuice, but it costs about twice as much.

One little problem

What I don’t like about this charger is that it will momentarily disconnect from all the devices it’s charging when you plug or unplug things. So if you unplug your phone, your laptop will disconnect then reconnect, which is kind of annoying.

Should you buy it?

Considering the Mix4 is smaller than Apple's OEM charger, costs just over half of its closest competitor, and has an abundance of ports? Even with the small disconnection glitch previously mentioned, Aukey's Omnia Mix4 is indeed a killer travel charger.
